What You'll Do/Need

The Unix Systems Engineer plays a leading role in the design, implementation, and administration of our systems. This team member’s role is to ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the information systems that support core organizational functions. This is achieved by monitoring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all networked software and associated operating systems. The Systems Engineer will apply proven communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to identify, communicate, and resolve issues in order to maximize the benefit of the IT investments.  


Responsibilities

  • Administer, configure, troubleshoot, upgrade, and support Unix Systems in heterogeneous server environments running under various operating systems (including AIX, Red Hat, and CentOS Linux)
  • Independently determine and develop approaches to solutions with limited direction
  • Perform day-to-day systems administration activities, such as user administrations, disk management, package install, etc.
  • Identify, analyze, fix, and determine root cause and future prevention of complex problems involving hardware, software, networking, and applications
  • Install and configure various enterprise-wide infrastructure tools including automation tools, job schedulers, authentication and authorization software, and backup tools
  • Quickly restore service during system outages, providing troubleshooting support to team members, performing proactive problem prevention, and escalating technical details to technical lead and/or to vendor support
  • Utilize enterprise tools to manage, monitor, and secure enterprise data center environments
  • Take part in after-hours on-call rotation schedule and weekend activities

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in computer science or a similar technical subject
  • Three years of related work experience
  • Three years of experience performing server systems design, implementation, and administration or equivalent
  • Three years of experience analyzing system failures to minimize outages and interruptions or equivalent
  • Two years of experience working with server-class hardware or equivalent
  • Experience taking projects from initial concept to implementation
  • Strong communication skills
