What You'll Do/Need

The RF Planning Engineer is responsible for providing preplanning, radio planning, prelaunch optimization and capacity planning services for metro/RAN network implementation projects and client network designs in collaboration with the Rocket Fiber project team. This team member designs, plans and oversees installation, maintenance and optimization of wireless radio access network communications systems, including radio propagation modeling and received signal prediction utilizing specific planning tools for wireless technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Understanding of target system requirements and functionality
  • Support a wide range of point-to-point and multipoint wireless product certifications in the unlicensed and licensed spectrums
  • Experience in 3GPP/LTE and emerging 5G technologies
  • Dimension the RAN network (number of channel elements, Nodes, RNCs) according to coverage, capacity and quality requirements
  • Plan Nodes in RF planning tools (NetAct Planner/InfoVista) to define related parameters (site coordinates, antenna type, antenna height, antenna tilt, antenna azimuth, CPICH power, cable loss, propagation model parameters)
  • Validate field site configuration during the technical site survey visit and prepare the Technical Site Survey report
  • Set specific RF parameters for the site to be integrated (RNCid, WBTSid, LcrId, MCC, MNC, LAC, RAC, SAC, CId, UARFCN frequency, scrambling code, T-cell, neighbors)
  • Analyze site performance after integration through drive test measurements and/or OSS measurements; detect eventual problems and recommend changes to fix those problems
  • Coordinate and validate the technical work of a small group of RF Performance Engineers in a project
  • Transfer the competence internally and towards Rocket Fiber customers through formal trainings or on-the-job training
  • Contribute to project planning and design decisions

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering or five years of equivalent relevant experience
  • Strong knowledge of RF engineering principles (RF communications theory, design principles, network optimization, propagation modeling and prediction, etc.)
  • RAN and LTE experience
  • Knowledge of test tools and software (JDSU, Tektronix, Probes, IBUs, etc.)
  • Signaling skill set (training on tools can be provided)
  • Good understanding of multithreading and inter-process communication
  • Experience in performance management (system KPIs and metrics, etc.)
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and communication skills
  • Ability to work with clients, peers, carriers and testing labs to achieve project, personal and team goals
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently
  • Some travel is required
